FASHION SPOTLIGHT: SPARKLE BY SONJI B
Aug 2011 15

IAA: Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your educational background?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B: Sparkle is owned and operated by Sonji Brooks, wife of SuperBowl Champion Barrett Brooks. Sparkle was launched with the help of her daughters Jasmine and Asia Johnson. Sonji is a fashion designer, nurse, and entrepreneur. I am here to show the world that your personality can be shown without speaking, better yet, I can help you make a statement without words, if you just add a little Sparkle. My inspiration comes from Daniel 12:3……..”And the wise shall shine” I would love to hear from you and remember to Smile, Sparkle, and Shine.

IAA:  What does fashion mean to you?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  Fashion means to me…. inventing, evolving, promoting, and studying the latest style, hair, clothing and jewerly.

IAA: How would you define your city’s fashion?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  I would define Philly’s fashion as being contagious. If you are hot then others will follow

IAA:  When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  I realized I wanted to become a fashion designer at an early age. Crocheting clothes since 12 and wearing 4 inch stilettos by the 9th grade, I knew I was fashion.

IAA: What was the first article of jewelry you ever designed?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B: The first article of jewelry I designed was the chain feather earrings.

IAA: Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of Jewelry?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B: The process I go through to design jewelry comes from objects around me. I look at shapes and colors and then the ideas are created.

IAA: What are some of your accomplishments as a designer?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B: My accomplishments are many. I pride myself in not only having celebrities who wear my items, because I am one, but more importantly I am grateful for the everyday consumer. I have so many everyday customers and they are the ones who matter to me the most.

IAA:  Who are some of your favorite designers?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B: My favorite designers are Chanel, David Yurman, Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana. Now believe me, this list doesn’t even touch the amount of talent out there.

IAA: How long have you worked as a designer?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  I graduated fashion design school back in 1990, but I’ve been a fashionista from an early age.

IAA: How do you select your models?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B: I select my models myself. I like to use my customers because they matter the most.

IAA:  What are some of your favorite clothing stores/catalogs/websites?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  My favorite websites are Dimepiece, Patricia Fields, Mycatwalk, Nastygalclothing and JeffreyCampbell. I like to look different, so I shop boutiques more than the trends.

IAA:  Do you consider yourself an artist?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  I do consider myself an artist because an artist is one that creates and evolves by virtue of imagination and that describes me.

IAA:  What matters to you most as a fashion designer?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  What matters the most to me is that the customer is happy and they don’t all look the same, which is hard to avoid when people like a certain look

IAA:  What’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  My favorite part of what I do is seeing someone beautiful and shinning out amongst the rest

IAA:  What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  My advice is to just be you and don’t worry about what others are rocking. If you like it others will love it… believe me when I rock stuff people follow.

IAA: In addition to having your jewelry line, you also have an Indian hairline. Tell us about your Indian Hair
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  Unprocessed Virgin Indian Remy means that you have purchased hair in its natural state, because of this there will be some inconsistency with the hair, which makes it all the more beautiful

Pre-Application

1. Wash before application
2. Rinse thoroughly
3. Air Dry

Hair Maintenance

Shampoo
1. Always brush out knots before washing
2. Wash Indian Hair once a week with a mild shampoo
3. Do not massage hair
4. Rinse thoroughly

Conditioner
1. Condition with a moisturizing conditioner (for example: Dove)
2. Deep conditioner if you color it
3. Apply from the tips to the roots
4. Never sleep with wet hair and avoid sleeping on wet hair

How long does it last?
That question can not be answered. Indian Remy can last up to a year (in head time) if cared for properly. I have seen others last longer, but it doesn’t mean you will have the same results.

IAA: Where can readers purchase your Indian hair and jewelry?
SPARKLE BY SONJI B:  People can purchase my items at www.sparklebysonjib.com
