IAA SPOTLIGHT: Get To Know-LONE MANTIS-Chicago’s Uprising Star!
Nov 2011 16

IAA:  What city and state are you from?
LONE MANTIS:  I’m from Morton Grove, IL. I was born in Chicago, and I am looking to return to the city soon.

IAA:  What is your music background?
LONE MANTIS:  I’ve loved hip-hop since I was a child. I was never really influenced or encouraged to listen to it, but I did. It has played a major role in my life ever since.

IAA:  What inspired you to pursue music?
LONE MANTIS:  I was inspired to pursue music because I developed a passion for creative writing.  I began implementing my creative writing skills as a musical artist in hopes that I could do something with them outside of the classroom. I was actually really tired of everything I was hearing on the radio and began rapping just as a joke. People would gather around in the school café to listen to me freestyle and I realized that I could do something special with hip hop music.

IAA:  What are your songs about?
LONE MANTIS:  I write about a variety of subjects and themes. The new stuff that I am working discusses my transitions from a young man into adulthood. I talk about everything from college life to adulthood. I also talk about encounters and relationships with the opposite sex, life on the weekends, and the desire to grow into a better man, and finding my place as an artist.

IAA:  Do you write your own music?
LONE MANTIS:  Yes, I write all of it.

IAA:  Who are your musical influences?
LONE MANTIS:  Slam poets, independent and underground hip hop artists, cipher starters, freestylers on the city streets, and all the hip hop artists I’ve ever heard. I am commit to building off of my predecessors and standing out amongst those who have come before me or stand alongside me.

IAA:   How would you describe your music to people?
LONE MANTIS:  I try to combine numerous performance elements such as punch lines, speed and tempo variations, and lyrical wordplay. I would say my style is diverse because I can rap fast or slow. I can do a freestyle, lyrical track, or more radio friendly joint. I’m always trying to do something new and different.

IAA:  What makes you stand out from other artist?
LONE MANTIS:  What makes me unique as an artist is my dedication to freestyle rap. I was given the opportunity to showcase my freestyle abilities live on a hip hop radio. I don’t think that many artists can freestyle off the top of their heads. I like to let my audience give me topics and words to rhyme about. Being a recent college graduate I had to learn how to balance a heavy work load while in school. There were times I would day dream dropping out to pursue music, but I stayed committed and graduated.  Everything I learned inside and outside of the classroom the past four years helped me become the person and artist I am today.

IAA:  What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
LONE MANTIS:  My ultimate goal with my music is to keep progressing and making moves that will increase my fan base and better my chances of recording and performing professionally. I just want to keep getting better at what I do and showcase my talents in a way that will allow me to gain more exposure.

IAA:  How can your fans access your music and contact you?
LONE MANTIS:  I have a few websites and places where fans can interact with me and my music.
